Mayo Clinic Health System-MedEx shadowing experience!

Applications are being accepted for MedEx Fall 2025 starting September 1 until September 30!

2025 MedEx College Edition, Eau Claire and Menomonie

The MedEx College Edition program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire is an opportunity for UWEC students with a demonstrated interest in medicine and/or allied health professions. Students accepted to the program will spend up-to 6 half-day sessions job shadowing in different health professional areas during a typical workday in the clinic.

For some areas (PT, OT, genetic counseling, pharmacy, speech language pathology, radiation therapy, medical lab tech) students cannot shadow ONLY those professionals. MedEx is designed as an exploratory program to help students gain exposure to a broad range of healthcare professionals. Students will have opportunities to shadow specific professions and specialties, but the purpose of MedEx is to expand understanding of the many roles within healthcare.

Before applying for the MedEx-College Edition program, students must first complete at least 30 volunteer hours at Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) OR be a current Mayo Clinic Health System employee and completed at least 30 work hours.

Other requirements for participation in the MedEx-College Edition program:
• Minimum college GPA of 3.0
• Must be a current UWEC student in Fall 2025 and have completed at least two full academic semesters at UWEC
• Seriously considering a career in medicine
• Significant experience in health-related extracurricular activities preferred

There are three opportunities for this experience:

Fall Session November-January
Spring session March-April
Summer session July-August
Shadowing hours will be completed during regular clinic hours of Monday-Friday 8-4:30pm
Mandatory in-person orientation, for those who have not previously participated in MedEx, will be held on Monday, October 20th, 2025 at 6 pm at the Luther Building Hospital
Shadowing for Fall 2025 session must be completed by January 23, 2026

Some of my favorite memories in the program have been getting a close-up look at a day in the life of a neurologist, an ER doctor, a pediatrician, an orthopedic surgeon, a cardiologist — we were lucky to get a good taste of our future. That just doesn’t happen anywhere else.

Marshfield Clinic Observation Opportunity

Marshfield Clinic Observation Experiences have resumed in a limited capacity based on resources. Marshfield Clinic staff volunteer their time to allow observation of their practice. Because of the voluntary nature of the experience, meeting application requirements does not guarantee experience.

Marshfield Clinic Health System defines an Observational Experience as the observation of an employee in his/her professional role with no physical (patient) contact other than airborne exposure.
