The Blugold Learning Center employs a student staff of tutors, coaches, PASS leaders, and welcome desk assistants. Jobs in the BLC allow for flexible, on-campus hours while gaining skills and expertise that look great on any resume. See below for position descriptions, and send us an email if you're interested in joining the BLC team!

 

Academic Coaching

If you are interested in applying to become an Academic Coach, review the academic skills the BLC offers coaching in and consider the criteria below. The BLC generally hires coaches who...

  • have strong time management and organizational skills.
  • possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • have interest in collaborating with and helping others.
  • have strong leaderships skills.
  • have a positive attitude toward and knowledge of UWEC support services/programs.
  • can commit to working at least two semesters.

The BLC generally hires coaches before the start of fall semester and provides paid training prior to the start of the semester.  Current starting pay is $14.00/hour.

Peer Tutoring

If you are interested in applying for a Peer Tutor position, review the courses tutored in the BLC, and consider the criteria below. 

The BLC generally hires tutors who...

  • have a strong background in their tutoring content area (B or higher in any course tutored or equivalent experience).
  • have a proven track record of academic success (usually B average or better).
  • enjoy working with and helping their peers.
  • can list one or more UWEC faculty or academic staff members as references.
  • can commit to being consistent, reliable employees.

Tutors are hired at the end of each semester for the following term. Paid training is provided before tutoring begins and continues throughout the semester. 

Current starting pay is $14.00/hr.

Open positions can be found by logging into  using your UWEC credentials and searching for Peer Tutor.

Peer Assisted Study Sessions

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are held twice every week and are available to all students in specified sections of a course. PASS Leaders encourage peer collaboration and facilitate study sessions using active learning strategies. PASS Leaders average 9-12 hours of work per week. If you are interested in applying to become a PASS Leader, review the courses we currently have PASS paired with, and consider the information below.

PASS Leader Responsibilities:

  • Attend class and be a model student
  • Make regular announcements about study sessions to students in the class
  • Hold two, 1.5-hour study sessions every week
  • Plan study sessions
  • Hold 1 office hour every week
  • Attend all PASS workshops and meetings
  • Keep and maintain accurate session records
  • Take and maintain accurate attendance records

The BLC generally hires PASS leaders who...

  • earned a grade of B or higher in the course they will be PASS leader for.
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • possess strong communication skills and relate well with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • are self-motivated.
  • have excellent time management skills.
  • can commit to working as a PASS leader for at least two semesters.

The BLC generally hires PASS Leaders before each semester and provides initial and continuous paid training throughout the semester. Current starting pay is $14.00/hour.

Welcome Desk Assistants

If you are interested in becoming a Welcome Desk Assistant (WDA), open positions can be found by logging into Handshake using your UWEC credentials and searching for Welcome Desk Assistant.

The BLC generally hires WDAs who…
  • are friendly with a desire to help others.
  • can create a positive welcoming environment.
  • possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • provide accurate information about services, programs, and resources.
  • have previous customer service (preferred).
The BLC generally hires WDAs in the spring semester to start work in the upcoming fall/spring semesters. Current starting pay is $11.00/hour.
